BMW announced a voluntary recall of approximately 235,000 worldwide in their Mini brand vehicles. The recall includes 89,000 vehicles in the United States. The defect arises from overheating of the electronic circuit board which controls the water pump that cools the turbocharger in the vehicles. Overheating of the electronic circuit board can lead to a smoldering water pump and, in some instances, vehicle fires. So far there have been 81 fires worldwide. 12 of those 81 occurred in the United States and were reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). None of the fires as of yet have resulted in any accidents or injuries. According to BMW these fires occurred while the vehicles were running but standing still.
The recall includes some model built between March 2006 and January 2011
● Mini Cooper S hatchbacks and convertibles;
● Mini Cooper Clubman S (the longer three-door Mini);
● Mini Cooper Countryman S (the larger, four-door SUV Mini); and
● John Cooper Works high performance versions of the Mini Cooper
